what is beauty?

I have been thinking about this ever since I visited my friend last week... and I felt like I had to write. My friend, her hubby and little boy are going through something that no parent should ever have to go through, a loss of a child. It's been a rough time for them. It's been worse than "rough," I don't even think there is a word to describe their pain, guilt, and anguish. We had a good visit together with our children. We talked about it and she was very honest about her feelings. I'm always trying to imagine what I would be like if it happened to me. I don't think I would have her courage and her strength. I would want to hide away from the world and just shrivel up. She is facing this tragedy head on, dealing with the feelings, taking steps towards healing, loving her lost daughter. It's really amazing. As I drove off from our visit, she waved to us holding on to her precious little boy. At that moment she looked so beautiful, radiant even. Yes, she was in pain, yes, she was hurting, yes she was longing for something she couldn't have... but something about that honesty is beautiful. something about her courage is beautiful. and something about her love is beautiful.

I guess you can say I learned a life lesson that day... true beauty has truth, courage, love, all mixed into the fabric of a person. it might not be pretty all the time, but it's certainly beautiful.
