e-Bay update...

I won the e-Bay auction item I was bidding for. It was quite exciting and how appropriate right around the birth of Alexander Graham Bell, which is today. He discovered the phone, but also helped out the deaf community which was his passion. Hubby and I learned all about him when we were in Nova Scotia this past summer. He is actually buried there on his huge estate, Beinn Bhreagh, overlooking Bras d'Or Lake in Baddeck, Nova Scotia. Check it out below. As for the 1961 phone, I can't wait to hang it up on the wall and call someone "old-school" with the rotary dial!

Alexander Graham Bell was a influential man in the education of the deaf. Please be careful how you praise him regarding deaf culture. In particular, "Although he married a deaf woman, a former speech pupil, Mabel Hubbard, Bell strongly opposed intermarriage among deaf people. Bell feared "contamination" of the human race by the propagation of deaf people even though most deaf people statistically are born to hearing parents." He also was influential in causing the turn of the tide in education toward Oralism which discourages any use of manual language a.k.a sign language be used or taught in the classroom. Many deaf people agree that American Sign Language is their native language and AG Bell forbid it's use causing a backward step in access, individuality, personal expression, freedom, etc. See article on the impact of Oralism:

In general, he is not thought of as fondly as he is portrayed in the hearing arena to deaf individuals. Just an FYI...

Congrats on the phone!
